This mix is recorded at the "Dimitrios" Shipwreck near Gytheio in the South of Greece, where we stayed at Angelica & Melina's Airbnb which we dearly recommend. The view is amazing and both are lovely souls: https://abnb.me/c3zDfPaKbyb There are many rumors about the ship's origins and how it got stranded on the beach. Most relate that the ship was used to smuggle cigarettes between Turkey and Italy.

What is Amazon Music HD?
Amazon Music HD is a subscription service which offers listeners a massive library from which they can stream all their favourite music with outstanding audio quality.
Until recently, Amazon Music, Spotify and Apple Music have all been in close competition, with similarly-sized music libraries and comparable audio quality.
And since hi-res streaming services like Qobuz and Tidal have gained popularity for their huge hi-res libraries, Amazon Music HD offers a new and exciting alternative.
Boasting 50 million tracks in CD quality, Amazon Music HD sets to push the boundaries even further with thousands of its tracks available in ultra HD.
How Does Amazon Music HD Compare to Rival Services?
As the technology sector is obsessed with bettering our TV picture, especially since 4k has now superseded HD, why have we continued to overlook sound quality?
Hi-res audio naturally carries a much higher bit-rate and subsequently packs much more detail.
To put the effect of audio file compression into perspective, imagine taking your favourite book and re-writing it with only the bare essentials of the main plot.
The result is a story which you still recognise, but with all the little details that the author included to keep us engrossed, now deleted.
Detail always makes for a more immersive experience, and without it, we may fail to see the bigger picture as intended. The same applies to audio compression, where elements of sound are overlooked by an algorithm to make file sizes smaller.
Resulting sound quality often lacks real clarity, and stereo imaging can often be compromised to sound narrower. Spotify streams in MP3 at 320 kbps (kilobits-per-second), and Apple Music's AAC format only gives 256 Kbps.
By contrast, Amazon HD quotes 16-bit/850 Kbps for CD-quality sound and 24-bit/3730 Kbps for Ultra HD, trouncing the sound quality offered by the service's main competitors.
To ensure such large audio files stream without any latency or buffering issues, Amazon Music HD has encoded their hi-res content into FLAC files.
FLAC, which stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, compresses audio file sizes without sacrificing sound quality.
This codec is widely adopted by most hi-res streaming services, such as Qobuz, because it is versatile and supported by many brands of smart speakers.
And now that our internet speeds are faster and our chosen players are smarter than ever, hi-res audio is ready for everyone to enjoy!
Who Can Stream Amazon Music HD?
Access is not limited to those who have bought exclusively into Amazon's smart devices, such as the Firestick and the Amazon Echo. Amazon Music HD is ready for streaming to many compatible smart speakers and players.
Several manufacturers of smart speakers have announced that their products are fully equipped for Amazon HD.
Owners of Sonos speakers will be pleased to know that their devices fully support FLAC so that Amazon Music HD will stream with no issues.
However, with no confirmed hi-res playback support as of yet, Ultra HD streams may be downscaled to CD-quality when played through Sonos devices, which is all most people need.
But with Bluesound smart speakers promising the ability to playback hi-res music, even their baby Pulse Flex 2i is ready to unleash the quality of Ultra HD.
And for those who own audio components from prestigious brands like Arcam, Marantz and Onkyo, Amazon Music HD is ready to bring hi-res to the Hi-Fi.
Also, mobile devices with Apple iOS 11 and above will be compatible, as will Android devices running Lollipop or newer, for hi-res music playback on the go.
What IS Dolby Atmos on Amazon Music HD?
Amazon Music HD is the first music streaming service to bring Dolby Atmos audio to its subscribers.
The Dolby Atmos codec was initially designed for cinemas to show movies with a more accurate surround sound field, offering pinpoint placement of effects for a more immersive experience.
Realising that Dolby Atmos adds a new dimension to their mixes, artists and recording engineers are turning to the codec for that extra depth of realism in the presentation of their music.
Currently offering a collection of fifty Atmos-encoded songs, Dolby is discussing plans with major record labels to implement the technology into both new recordings and artists' back catalogues.
While Amazon Music HD offers a platform to stream Dolby Atmos-encoded songs from, listeners will still need a receiver or smart speaker equipped with a Dolby Atmos decoder to play them.
But for streaming regular stereo and mono recordings from Amazon Music HD, any compatible smart speaker or device will work, as discussed previously in Who Can Stream Amazon Music HD?
How Much Will it Cost Me?
Compared to Qobuz and Tidals' subscription fee of £19.99 each per month, Amazon Music HD is ready to be streamed to your smart speakers for £14.99 per month.
Existing customers of Amazon Prime will benefit the most, with streaming from Amazon Music HD priced at £12.99 per month.
A Family Plan is also available for multi-device playback and only costs £19.99 each month. However, Amazon's 90-day trial offers a temporary free version for listeners to sample the HD service for themselves.
What Do We Think?
At Smart Home Sounds, we love our music to sound as best as it possibly can. And given that there are numerous hi-res streaming services now available, picking the best one is down to a matter of preference.
Qobuz and Tidal sound excellent, as do the hi-res options available to stream from Deezer. But where Amazon Music HD will be popular is that it undercuts its rivals by price and has a superb sound library to match.
If you are using a player or smart speaker capable of hi-res, then certainly Amazon Music HD should be an exciting upgrade from standard-definition audio sources.
Like all the streaming platforms giving free options to trial their services, where is the harm in seeing if Amazon Music HD fulfils your expectations too?

Amazon Music Release HD version of their Music Service
Sonos & Spotify the perfect match for a home of music.
At Smart Home Sounds, we are passionate about the idea of playing music in every room of your home. Why be limited to just one room of music when you can enjoy it everywhere in your home? With Spotify and Sonos speakers, you and your family have access to all the songs on Earth at the tap of a button or the sound of a word with the renowned exceptional sound quality that Sonos brings.
How Does it work?
Sonos makes this possible by using your WiFi instead of Bluetooth to stream your music directly from the Spotify app. This means you can roam your house freely and still have control of any speaker in your home, from anywhere in your home. Set the speaker up using the free Sonos app and import your Spotify premium account. From here, you can delve into the Spotify app, Sonos app or control with your voice - whichever you prefer - and start playing your favourite tunes on your speaker and group multiple speakers together to activate Party Mode.
Because of how the ecosystem of Sonos works, you can also play different tracks in different rooms at the same time using just one Spotify account - or if you’d like to keep things separate between your family members, you can have multiple Spotify accounts at a better value price with a Family subscription.
With the recent collaboration between Sonos and Amazon, you can now talk to your Sonos speakers using either one of Amazon’s Echo devices that pair to your existing speakers or talk directly to the new Sonos One which has Amazon Alexa built in which can understand your Spotify voice commands. For example, you could ask your speaker:
“Alexa, play my Chill Playlist everywhere.”
“Alexa, play me new songs by Adele.”
“Alexa, what’s playing?”
“Alexa, play me Coldplay in the Bedroom.”
Another great feature Sonos have enabled on their speakers is the ability to control your Spotify music library directly from the Spotify App. Using Spotify Connect, the connection to the Sonos speakers is extremely stable and does not suffer from interrupted music when phone calls are received, for example. This is ideal for people who don't want to leave the native Spotify App.
I'm ready to fill my home with music, where do I start?
Another benefit of the Sonos range is the wide choice of speakers available to fit any room or situation. For us, a great smart speaker to start your collection off is the Sonos One released in October 2017. The Sonos One is compact but extremely powerful and combines all the existing features of the Sonos ecosystem as well as being equipped with a six-microphone array to hear your Amazon Alexa commands from anywhere in the room. Priced at £199, we think this is the smartest choice for your first smart speaker.

It's finally here
When Apple Music launched in June 2015, thousands of Sonos users were quick to take to forums and social media asking the vital question: will Apple Music ever come to Sonos? Apple & Sonos responded and 6 months later Smart Home Sounds has a hands-on review of Apple Music on Sonos.
It's clear that Apple were keen to work with Sonos on bringing Apple Music to the home. For Sonos to be the first smart speaker to integrate Apple Music is a big validation for the Sonos system and one potential customers should take note of.
“Many of our members love Sonos and want to enjoy our service throughout their homes,” Apple’s Senior Vice President Eddy Cue said in the statement. “We’re thrilled to be working with Sonos to provide the Apple Music experience in even more places fans enjoy music.”
How does it differ from Apple's native app?
Existing Apple Music subscribers will instantly feel at home when adding Apple Music to their Sonos systems. You are immediately presented with 4 main large music selection boxes:
- For You
- New Music
- Radio
- My Music
For non Apple subscribers the following is offered from each section:
FOR YOU
This is playlists and albums specifically selected based on your initial favourite artists and genres you selected at setup. As time goes by, it takes into consideration what you have been listening to and provides what it thinks to be relevant selections of music. The more you use Apple Music the better the selection gets. Personally, I have been using Apple Music since launch and am now finding the 'For You' tab great for finding that classic album I forgot about, or a new artist I’m keen to hear more from.
This is, as you may expect, the place to find new music. Top Albums and Songs are divided into genres for you to easily find new music from the genre you love. There are also three more tabs to explore, which for us are what makes music streaming services hard to beat.
Apple Editors
This is Cupertino's own DJ’s recommended playlist selections based on a selected genre. For example, selecting dance from the Apple editors selection you will be presented with playlists such as: Driving to Dance, A-list dance, Intro into Fat Boy Slim, Ibiza Poolside Chill, 90s Dance Classics and many more. These playlists are great for discovering new music and keeping variety in the genre you enjoy.
Activities
Subscribers familiar with Spotify will instantly relate to the Activities tab. Apple Music serves up playlists based on everyday activities such as driving, cooking, celebrating, romancing, running and many more. This is a great way to listen to music based on your current mood or activity.
Curators
The Apple Music curators section brings together a group of authoritative voices in music we all know and trust. From Rolling Stones to DJ Mag to Pitchfork and to the growing THIS IS Music curator. Apple have partnered with the respected music curators and sources to keep you up to date on what’s hot across all major genres and guide you through this new world of streaming music.
Radio Tab
With the integration of Radio tab comes direct access to the critically acclaimed Beats 1 station. This is something we have been waiting for at Smart Home Sounds since Apple Music launched in June 2015. It is now the radio station of choice in the Smart Home Sounds office. When Apple launched its streaming service it headhunted the services of Zane Low to head up the Beats 1 station with no specific genre in my mind, just good music, non-genre specific. For those not familiar with Beats 1, it's one radio station that streams worldwide 24 hours a day. Shows are broadcast from the UK, New York and Los Angeles. Zane Low may be the big name show host but our favourite show is the London broadcast with Julie Adenuga, as many reviews we've read agree.
Be the DJ? Along with Beats 1 radio on Apple Music there is also an option for the user to build their own station.
Just select any song, album or artist and it will practically build itself. Adjust the mix to hear more songs you know or discover unfamiliar gems. Love a track? We’ll play more like it. The more you fine-tune the station, the more personalised it becomes.
The last and final music selection tab is My Music
As the name suggests this is where all your previously saved / purchased music resides. This is split up into Artists, Albums, Songs and Playlists. Any previously bought iTunes music will be also be available in the relevant folders along with any added Apple Music selections. This also works for iTunes Match albums that have been uploaded. The Playlist tab does have a few options available when selected. You have a Recently Added option, which is where any recently added smart playlist created by Apple reside. There is also an Apple Music playlist folder where all playlists created by Apple you have added reside. Below these 2 tabs are all of your personally created playlists including any previous playlist you have made on iTunes over the years.
Personally, this is the tab I hope we see some updates on soon. Wishlist items would be when selecting Albums, Songs or Artists, a Recently Added section at the top of each genre. With our ever growing libraries, it's nice to get to your latest music quickly. Another feature I would like to see is the ability to display albums & songs by date added as well as alphabetical order. At present, it is also not possible to add a song to an Apple playlist via the Sonos controller or if you find an album of interest you can’t add it to your Apple Music library from the Sonos controller so it would be available when you are next at your MacBook or iPad. This was a feature Spotify didn’t have at first but does today. The above are all small software tweaks that I’m sure Apple will add over time.
Summary
In summary, Apple Music is a great addition to the Sonos system and one that solidifies Sonos as the number 1 choice for multi room audio. Apple Music subscribers now have a great way to play their music libraries throughout their home on a range of high quality Sonos smart speakers. For non Apple Music subscribers, I think it's going to be a service to closely watch as when the might of Apple target an area they rarely fail to come out on top.
